Onam sadhya.
Posted: August 31, 2012 Filed under: Uncategorized Leave a commentToday is the first day, but likely not the last, that I’ll be writing events of the novel on the same calendar day that they happen. I like it when the circles of the universe line up like that.
A lot happens to Meena on August 31st, 2068. Most significantly, she leaves home in the midst of the Hindu festival of Onam, a harvest and homecoming holiday that marks the end of the monsoon. It felt right for Meena to have to leave, violently, suddenly, catapulting towards Mumbai, when she should have been sitting down to an Onam sadhya, a warm family feast, in Thrissur, Keralam, India, the heart of the heart of the world.
But Meena is destined for a feast far more strange. And the hero must leave home.
